The Dangers of Steroid Abuse

When the long-awaited Mitchell Report was released last December, dozens of professional baseball players suddenly scrambled into damage-control mode. Spearheaded by the former U.S. senator from Maine, the report named names and may have even altered the careers and legacies of many current and former players.

In the report’s wake, promises have been made to test athletes for illegal performance-enhancing drugs more often and levy heftier fines on offenders.

Mark Minelli a professor at Central Michigan University who studies drug abuse among athletes, said this might be the last chance for professional baseball to show the world it is serious about cracking down on steroid abuse.

“If the report recommendations are not incorporated, MLB could strike out with the bases loaded,” he said.
