The Dangers of Steroid Abuse
When the long-awaited Mitchell Report was released last December,
dozens of professional baseball players suddenly scrambled
into damage-control mode. Spearheaded by the former U.S. senator
from Maine, the report named names and may have even altered
the careers and legacies of many current and former players.
In the report’s wake, promises have been made to test
athletes for illegal performance-enhancing drugs more often
and levy heftier fines on offenders.
Mark Minelli a professor at Central Michigan University who
studies drug abuse among athletes, said this might be the
last chance for professional baseball to show the world it
is serious about cracking down on steroid abuse.
“If the report recommendations are not incorporated,
MLB could strike out with the bases loaded,” he said.
