CAREERS + JOBS

An Athlete's Perspective

That’s it. It’s over. Back to reality. After playing football for eighteen years, the last seven of which professionally in the NFL, my time has finally come. As a player I was always keenly aware of the fact that I could not play forever and at some point I would have to move on to a new career and a new life. Telling myself that time and time again really doesn’t make this any easier.

The truth is that it hurts terribly giving up something you love. Despite the fact that I have other interests, playing football and hitting people is all I ever really wanted to do. Unfortunately I chose a sport that you can not play forever and in fact a sport that takes a tremendous toll on your body.

They always tell you that the average career for an NFL player is around 3.2 years, so I guess I take some comfort in knowing that I beat the average. I am fully vested and qualified for all of the critical benefits that come along with having a decent NFL career like a pension, annuity, 401K, Health Savings Account, and severance pay. Football has helped me get off to a good financial head start in life and allowed me to have options moving forward.
