"Thank You For Having Me..."

For the audience awaiting the presentation from a celebrity speaker, those first words from the speaker’s mouth, “Thank you for having me…” should be the start of a magnificent experience for that audience – sadly it’s too frequently, it’s not the start, it’s the highlight. The fault, my dear friends, is not in the ears of the listeners but in the words of the speaker.

Understanding what the audience wants to hear is often significantly different from what a speaker intends to talk about and that difference is enough to turn a good experience into a less than stellar performance. And, I bet you can already sense who I’m going to say is at fault.

Oftentimes, even the most celebrated person from a chosen field is nervous before having to speak to a group. The quarterback who has faced a ton of defense bearing down on him, the shortstop who has faced a pitcher throwing a hundred mile per hour fastball at him, the track star who has faced off against the fastest women of the world are often a nervous wreck prior to having to stand in front of 250 middle-aged men and women who, believe it or not, worship you. But there attributes that you have applied to excel at your sport that will enable you to flourish as a speaker. It really isn’t that different.
